TULLOW Road residents can now safely leave their cars behind and happily take in the fresh Carlow air by choosing walking and cycling for their everyday journeys.
The Tullow Road Pedestrian and Cycle Scheme was officially opened last week by cathaoirleach of Carlow County Council cllr Fergal Browne, marking a significant step forward in promoting active travel and enhancing community connectivity in Carlow. This transformative project, funded by the National Transport Authority (NTA), has been three years in the making and delivers a comprehensive pedestrian and cycle facility.
The project will serve residential areas along the Tullow Road and link existing active travel infrastructure. The scheme aims to encourage more people to choose walking and cycling for everyday journeys, contributing to a healthier, more sustainable Carlow.
The opening ceremony was attended by members of Carlow County Council and staff, including chief executive Coilín O Reilly, deputy Natasha Newsome Drennan, representatives from the National Transport Authority, including Quentin O’Connor, representatives from the consultants OCSC, the contractors Priority Construction Ltd and members of the public.
“This is a momentous day for Carlow. The Tullow Road Pedestrian and Cycle Scheme is a fantastic example of our commitment to providing safe, accessible and sustainable travel options for our community,” said cllr Fergal Browne.
“This scheme will not only improve the lives of residents of the Tullow Road area but will also encourage a greater shift towards active travel throughout the county. I am proud to officially open this vital piece of active travel infrastructure.”
Coilín O Reilly, chief executive of Carlow County Council, described the project as a testament to the hard work and collaboration between the local authority, NTA, consultants OCSC, contractors Priority Construction Ltd and the local community.
“The Tullow Road Pedestrian and Cycle Scheme aligns with our broader vision of creating a more liveable and environmentally-friendly Carlow. We believe that investing in active travel infrastructure is crucial for the future of our county.”
Quentin O’Connor of the National Transport Authority remarked that the NTA was delighted to have supported Carlow County Council in delivering this important project.
“The Tullow Road Pedestrian and Cycle Scheme is a prime example of the kind of infrastructure that encourages more people to walk and cycle, contributing to reduced congestion, improved air quality and healthier lifestyles.”
