THERE’s nothing quite like heartbreak to fuel the creative mind and nourish the soul!

Love, and especially the loss of it, has inspired poets, novelists and artists for centuries, and so it continues to this day.

Local writer and poet Béibhinn Thorsch has just self-published a book of poetry called Libran Liturgy after she poured her emotions onto paper after the heartbreaking end to a relationship.

She’s also a songwriter so she found the move into poetry to be a natural step and one that particularly suits intense emotions.

“With poetry, you don’t have to read a whole book (like a novel) to feel understood or cared for,” explained Béibhinn. “This is a difficult industry to get into, but I needed to do it. I needed to get it out there, so I’ve self-published.” She opted to get 33 poems published in one collection called Libran Liturgy through Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing in both digital and hard-copy form.

“I wanted to have a hard copy as well as a digital version because I think there’s something about holding a physical book in your hands with poetry. To feel and process it, you need to hold it in your hands,” continued Béibhinn.

Béibhinn (26) was always drawn towards the arts after she was educated locally in the Gaelscoil, Gaelcholáiste and Presentation College. She graduated with a degree in journalism from Dublin City University and went on to complete a master’s in creative writing at Maynooth College.

“It was a dream to do it. It was a luxury thing to do,” said Béibhinn. adding that her year in Maynooth was a fantastic experience.

Since then, she’s been regularly sharing her poetry online, while she also recited her work in Lambert’s Coffee House for Culture Night last year. A multi-talented young woman, she has also acted in a play, First Light, at the Carlow Arts Festival and has released music under the name of Bev, which is available on Spotify.

Writing, though, and particularly poetry, is where she’s currently focussed because, as she explained, “I can’t get the writing bug out of me. I do it because I can’t not do it!” Libran Liturgy can be ordered from Kindle/eBook with a release date of 24 February. The paperback version will also be released on that date.
