AGRICULTURAL science students from Borris College impressed at this year’s Know Your Ag Science Quiz, finishing runners-up at the event in UCD’s Astra Hall, where over 200 fifth-year students from across the country took part in what was a hotly contested competition.

Hosted by Macra and the Irish Agricultural Science Teachers’ Association, in collaboration with UCD, the quiz brought together students to put their agricultural science knowledge to the test across a wide range of topics, such as livestock and tillage farming and machinery knowledge.

Sarah McIntosh of the Irish Farmers Journal was the quizmaster, putting students through their paces before they enjoyed a tour of the UCD campus, where they got to explore the on-site facilities.

Dean of agriculture and head of the School of Agriculture and Food Science professor Frank Monahan spoke to students and reminded them of the ample opportunities available at UCD for those with a passion for agriculture, where there are 14 undergraduate degree programmes.

Macra national president Josephine O’Neill said it was “fantastic” to see such a high standard of knowledge of agriculture.

“The future is bright for our industry when we have young people of this calibre coming through. Congratulations to everyone involved, especially our winners and runners-up, and sincere thanks to IASTA and UCD for helping make the day such a success,” she said.
