Spot flooding in Carlow town as orange warnings bring torrential rain

Parts of Carlow Town were hit by spot flooding this morning (Sunday 27 September) after torrential rain swept across the county under a Met Eireann status orange warning.

Carlow County Council confirmed at 13.30am that it was aware of overnight flooding in the Pembroke, Burrin Street and Millrace areas of town and that its municipal district crews were working with Uisce Eireann to deal with the problem.

The council stressed that river levels were "extremely low" and that the flooding was caused by "the massive amount of rain that has fallen overnight and our drainage network being overcome by volume".

"As rain stops this flooding should go quite quickly. We are continuing to actively monitor the situation, " the council said, adding that members of the public should contact them about any other issues they become aware of.

Local forecaster Alan O'Reilly of Carlow Weather reported flooding in parts of Carlow town as over 30mm of rain fell with up to 63.5mm recorded in parts of the south this morning.

"63.47mm of rain has been recorded at a Met Eireann station near Dungarvan in Waterford as the heavy rain quickly moves northeast. The station recorded 30mm in one hour," he said.

In an update at 10.20am Mr O'Reilly said the road at Hay Market was since clear and the water had gone.

"An awful morning but much better afternoon ahead," he posted.
