Dancing, entertainment, mass and more in Borris

Borris local notes featuring Declan Aungier
All roads lead to Newtown hall on Friday for a rambling house. It promises to be a great night of music, song and dance, with the craic kicking off at 8pm.
The committee thanks everyone who attended the June rambling house and all proceeds from the night were donated to the Hope Foundation. Hannah King and Brian Collier, who are travelling to Kolkata in October with the Hope Foundation, attended and spoke about the charity and the work they do. They are wished a safe journey and the group looks forward to hearing about their trip on their return.
The committee also thanks the Ballycullane Mummers who provided the entertainment.
The raffle winners were Patty Jordan, Mick Cassin, Evelyn Dolan, Kitty Walsh, Vera Lomax, Margaret Ryan, Susan Cushin, Tony Malone, Gerry Smithers, Anne Quigley, Dave Fenlon and Anne Quigley.
With Borris Focus centre regulars now without a base, there are calls for a community centre in the area. Cllr Willie Quinn says a suitable site and funding needs to be found for a long-term solution for group activities as well as others. The community hub sees 60 to 70 people from the village and its surrounds swing by each week to craft, converse and catch-up. However, the building they’ve been using for almost three years is no longer available to them.
Borris-based Cllr Quinn says the focus is on getting a site and funding to provide a community centre to cater for the crew, as well as other groups in the area.

There was no jackpot winner in Mount Leinster Rangers lotto draw and the numbers drawn were 3, 13, 15 and 28. The lucky dip winners were Maureen Murphy, Kyle; Mary Carroll, Killedmond; Conor Doyle, Kilcoltrim; Paula Nolan, Ballinasillogue; and Bill Murray, Knockmore. The next draw, for a jackpot of €6,500, will be held tonight (Tuesday). Tickets are available from the usual outlets or online.
The annual Mass will be celebrated in Ullard cemetery on Friday at 7.30pm. All are welcome.
A night of social dance to the music of Declan Aungier will be held in Rathanna Hall on Sunday. Admission is €10, refreshments will be served and there will be a raffle for some lovely prizes.
