Fiacc’s win local derby to go top of the table
St. Fiacc’s Thomas Lawler (left) celebrates opening the scoring with a fantastic strike.
St Fiacc’s bounced back from defeat against St Joseph’s last week to slay a Crettyard side who had a perfect record of three wins from three before the game.
Crettyard bossed the game for large periods but were wasteful in attack, not able to convert any of their chances. Fiacc’s were patient and took their chances when they had the openings but will feel that they could have had more goals, because the game was end to end for much of the game. However, they looked strong and composed and will be pleased with the manner of their victory.
Fiacc’s went closest early on as Eoghan Kavanagh found himself in down the left but couldn’t steer his effort on target.
Bobby Rowan went close for Crettyard but his effort from the left was saved. A Ciaran Scully free from the left was cleared. A Fionnan Brennan free for Crettyard from the left was hit wide on the near side.

Fiacc’s went close through Warith Oyeniyi who hit an effort from the right but could only setter it to the ‘keeper. With 17 minutes gone, Fiacc’s opened the scoring, Thomas Lawler from the halfway line spotting the Crettyard ‘keeper off his line and trying an ambitious effort which beat him to go in at the top of the goal.
Brennan had a chance to double the lead just three minutes later, but put his effort wide on the left.
The Fiacc's man then had free from the right cleared away before a Crettyard corner from the left was just as swiftly cleared at the other end.
Just after the half hour mark, a Mark Dowling effort from the left was saved and a Brennan free a minute later was saved as well. Michael Whelan hit an effort off the crossbar with eight minutes to go until half-time, before a Brennan free from the right was hit at Luke Dooley in the goal by Tiernan Patterson.
Patterson and Dowling both hit efforts over the bar in stoppage time before a Whelan strike from the left came back off the crossbar and wide on the far side.
Crettyard went closest after half-time as a Brennan free from the right was cleared to safety before Sean Rowan hit an effort from the edge of the box that sailed over the bar. Scully went close for Fiacc’s, hitting an effort from distance wide on the near side.
Another Rowan free from the center circle was hit wide on the left. He continued to bombard the Fiacc's box with dead-ball deliveries, but the next one went wide at the back post with nobody able to get onto the end of it. Three minutes later, an Aaron Mackey effort from distance was hit into the ‘keeper.

With 14 minutes to go, a Scully free from the right was headed wide on the far side by Brian Dos Santos. Two minutes later, a Dooley free from halfway was hit into the Crettyard ‘keeper. Cillian Gorman got in behind the Fiacc’s ‘keeper from the right but he couldn’t control his effort and put it wide.
A Gorman effort from the right was saved with ten minutes to go and an Alex Donnelly-Finn effort from the right was hit wide on the near side just moments later.
Rowan frees continued to be Crettyard's main source of attack, but another free from the edge of the box was hit straight at Dooley in the goal. and a carbon copy free from Rowan out on the left was then palmed away by Dooley, although it was probably heading wide on the near side anyway. Patterson followed up but could only steer the rebound straight at Dooley.
In stoppage time, a Scully free from the right saw a header cleared. Then, in the dying embers of the game, Oyeniyi made it 2-0, slotting an effort into the bottom right hand corner to cement the win for his side.
