Tributes paid to Carlow teen who died after escooter fall

Tributes have been paid to a 17-year-old Carlow man who died following an accident involving an e-scooter in the town.

Janis Ghirghircic Ozols, of Willow Park, Carlow, passed away on 30 June 2026 at Beaumont Hospital, Dublin, following the accident.

The incident occurred after 8.30pm on Monday, 29 June, when Janis fell from an e-scooter he was driving along Carpenters Way in Carlow town. A second male, aged 18, was a passenger on the e-scooter at the time and received minor injuries.

Janis was taken by ambulance to St Luke's Hospital, Kilkenny, before being transferred to Beaumont Hospital, where he later died.

He was the much-loved son of Liga and predeceased by his father, Tudor. He will be sadly missed by his heartbroken mother, brothers Roman, Mark, Sandris, Rihards and Ruslan, sister Kora, step-father Ingus, grandparents, aunts, uncle, cousins and his wide circle of friends.

News of his death has prompted an outpouring of grief in the Carlow community, with tributes describing him as a kind, well-mannered young man with an infectious smile and sense of humour. Among those to pay tribute was teacher Finola Hayden of Presentation College Carlow, who said Janis would be remembered for his humour, kindness and determination.

Funeral arrangements will be published on Friday afternoon, 3 July 2026.
