Myshall to host three-day religious devotion

THIS weekend, the community of Myshall and Drumphea will come together to celebrate the Quarantore (40 hours of devotion).

The Quarantore first began in Milan in 1534, and while it’s not exactly clear when it started in the parish of Myshall and Drumphea, it was certainly held in 1924 and has taken place every year for the past century without a break. The Quarantore begins at 7.30pm on Friday evening, 13 September, continuing on Saturday from noon to 5pm and culminating with 10am Mass on Sunday morning and the procession through the village with the Blessed Sacrament, ending with open-air Benediction. Many young people will be helping throughout the weekend and all are encouraged to come along. The Quarantore is always held on the Sunday nearest 14 September, which is the feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, after which the church in Myshall is named.
