Concern raised again over dangerous junction onto N80

Carlow County Council

“SOMEONE will be injured if something isn’t done fairly quickly.”

That was the warning from cllr John Cassin regarding the issue of a junction at Kilmeaney, at a recent meeting of Carlow Municipal District.

The matter was raised by cllr Fintan Phelan, who remarked that the junction was particularly dangerous when exiting out from Kilmeaney onto the N80.

“It is a particularly dangerous junction with people accelerating off the roundabout heading into Carlow. We really needed to look at how we can allow people in and out safely,” he said.

Town engineer Cian Madden stated that the junction had recently been resurfaced, but added that perhaps a safety audit should be carried out.

“If you wish me to refer it to TII, we’ll do that,” said Mr Madden.

“That’s been a problem for quite some time now,” remarked cllr John Cassin.

“It’s quite obvious that some sort of traffic-calming measure is needed … someone will be injured if something isn’t done fairly quickly,” he added.

Cllr Fergal Browne stated that TII was due to back to the council about this “treacherous” junction, adding that it is known as Kane’s Cross.
