LOCAL choir Carlow Voices brought their inimitable style to St Mary’s Church recently with their uplifting ‘Birds of a feather’ concert.

An energetic, action-packed programme inspired a wonderful warm audience, who responded enthusiastically to songs like In the mood, Swinging with the saints and the eponymous Birds of a feather by Billie Eilish.

Under the expertise of musical director Marian Gaynor, the choir showcased their year’s work with a confidence that truly captivated the audience.

Carlow Voices were also delighted to welcome special guest, renowned local musician and singer Karen O’Neill, who gave a spellbinding performance of Somewhere from West Side Story, while she was joined by the choir for a stunning version of Sounds of silence.

Carlow Voices were also accompanied by their resident live band, who always add enormously to their concerts, with Emma Picovici on cello, Niall Kelly on bass, John Gladney on percussion and ???? ???????? on piano.

Other highlights included Let the river run by Carly Simon, 59th St Bridge Song by Simon and Garfunkel and a funky, cool arrangement of Bring me little water, Silvie.

Chairperson of Carlow Voices Catherine Moloney welcomed all to St Mary’s and thanked Rev Paul Fitzpatrick and all at the parish, who make the choir feel so welcome on each and every visit. Catherine thanked everyone who helped make the occasion such a resounding success, especially the wonderful musicians, including the choir’s regular accompanist Maeve Lyons, choir soloist Philippa Jennings, the hardworking Carlow Voices committee and members, who made the concert possible, and all who donated and supported the raffle.

She particularly thanked the choir’s musical director Marian Gaynor, whose dedication, commitment and creative direction inspires the singers to take on new challenges and continuously grow their musicianship.

Carlow Voices are now taking a well-earned summer break but will return in September for rehearsals every Tuesday night in Scoil Mhuire gan Smál, Green Lane, Carlow.
