Keeper’s Cup soccer tournament in memory of Pauric ‘biggest one yet’

THE third Keeper’s Cup soccer tournament, held in memory of former Baltinglass club member Pauric Brady, was “the biggest one we’ve had yet,” said his mother, Avril.
Over 110 players entered the tournament with many more people watching as the teams progressed throughout the day on Sunday 26 July at Baltinglass Town AFC.
The event was named after Pauric’s long-time position as goalkeeper on the team, both for the soccer club and Baltinglass GAA. He passed away from cancer at only 18 years of age in 2023.
The weather held out for the third tournament held in his honour.
“It was a great day, an absolutely great day. Everyone enjoyed themselves,” said Avril. “Everyone got into the spirit of it.”
Some of her friends chipped in to organise the registration and run a shop while local businesses provided refreshments for the players.
Ronan, Pauric’s brother, was delighted that he scored a penalty, bringing his team to the semi-finals but unfortunately “it went pear shaped after that,” laughed Avril.
Many of the teams stayed around for the final match, adding to a brilliant atmosphere, with the team, KC Reserves taking home the Keeper’s Cup.
Avril estimates that they raised over €2,000 from the event which will be donated to Éist Cancer Support Centre Carlow which supported the family after Pauric passed away.
After an emotional week commemorating her son, Avril said the family hopes to run the tournament again next year.
