A NEW seat has been placed at Bennekerry Cross offering passersby the chance to sit, relax, chat with neighbours or simply take time out to watch the world go by.

The new seat marks the 25th anniversary of the planting of two oak trees at the junction, which was organised in 2000 by the two parishes in the community – Bennekerry Parish and Urglin Church, within the Carlow Union of Parishes.

“The oak trees were planted by the two church communities to mark the 2,000th anniversary of the birth of Christ and a plaque was placed there at the time,” said cllr Fergal Browne, cathaoirleach of Carlow County Council.

“Then parish priest Fr Paddy Daly and Rev Gary Dowd were involved, Johnny Couchman and members of both parishes,” he added.

“The new seating acknowledges the 25th anniversary and is placed beside the plaque. It’s great to see it is being used already,” said cllr Browne.

Cllr Browne thanked town engineer Cian Madden and council executive Kieran Brennan and the staff of Carlow Municipal District for their support of the new seat and representatives from both parishes.

“I’d also like to acknowledge the huge work done by Maurice Nolan in cutting the grass and maintaining this area, he does great work there,” said cllr Browne.
