Nigerian festival in Carlow promises food, fashion and afro beats
Nigeria Cultural Day
THE Nigerian community in Carlow will kick off the summer festivities with a fashion and music festival at The Exchange on Friday 3 July at noon.
“It’s about sharing Nigerian music to the world,” said Adetula ‘Skipo’ Temiola, chairperson of the Carlow Nigerian Community Committee.
He noted that Afrobeats and Nigerian music have been accepted all over the world now, with artists Burna Boy â the so-called ‘Giant of Africa’ â and Rema performing during the recent World Cup opening ceremony.
“We want to talk about that, we want to play the music, we want the people of Carlow to understand Afrobeats,” said Skipo.
The have also organised an open truck with a DJ that will travel around the town centre playing music, replicating the carnival that takes place in Nigeria every December. Gardaí and some 16 volunteers will be on hand to make sure it goes off without a hitch, said Skipo.
Festivities will continue at The Exchange, where there will be different African food, a masquerade and a runway fashion show to show of Nigerian designers from Galway, Dublin and London. Some of the clothes displayed will be for sale.
The event is free to join in and everyone is welcome. “It’s going to be a lot of fun,” said Skipo.
