New topic for CHAS lecture

Dr Ida Milne, a lecturer in European History at Carlow College
Unfortunately the Carlow Historical and Archaeological Society talk on ‘Carlow County Museum at 50’ due to take place tomorrow night has been cancelled.
Dr Ida Milne has kindly stepped in and will provide a very interesting presentation on the ‘Elmes Letters: A Wexford Protestant network at the heart of the 1798 rebellion’ in The Seven Oaks Hotel at 8pm this Wednesday 16 October.
In the 1970s, King Milne found a fascinating collection of family letters, many written during the 1798 rebellion, in the garret of his mother's family home in Old Ross.
The letters talk about the rapid drop in agricultural prices just before the rebellion and how various family branches experienced the rebellion and which side they were on.
In this talk, Carlow College historian Dr Ida Milne looks at her new research on how family engaged with the rebellion, including some surprises, and at the close sense of community in Old Ross the family experienced over the years. She reflects on how this may relate to the unity question.
Dr Ida Milne is lecturer in European History at Carlow College (Ireland), and Visiting Research Fellow, Department of History, Trinity College Dublin.
