Local music collective to play on Carlow Arts Festival closing night

Marc-Ivan O'Gorman performing in The Spinning Boy

LA-based Carlow man Marc-Ivan O’Gorman’s will bring a mix of Southern California and local flavour to Scraggs Alley, Carlow  with his band, The Spinning Boy on Monday 1 June at 7pm, closing Carlow Arts Festival in style.

Last year’s headlining set in the O’Hara’s Music Tent was a standout moment for the project, with The Spinning Boy marking the occasion as a great night in front of a hometown crowd.

The band are an evolving musical collective of international artists creating music that ranges from experimental ambient work to rock songs, with collaborations spanning Ireland, the US and India.

Marc-Ivan, best known as a theatre and filmmaker, is currently recording a four-song EP entitled Slievemargy, bringing together local musicians including the Glynn Brothers of Ye Vagabonds and singer-songwriter Ciara McNally, with tracks recorded by The DubRobot in Los Angeles and at Vitalik Studios in Ibiza. The release underlines the project’s blend of Carlow roots and global influences, with its country-goth-inflected a new departure from The Spinning Boy's usual experimental sound.

The Monday night line-up will feature Ken Nolan who is no stranger to those familiar with the Carlow music scene, along with brothers Bryan and Adrian O’Connell. Adrian has recently launched his latest single in the same venue with his band Leave on Mute, adding another familiar local connection to the bill.

With the final festival events around the town finishing in the afternoon, the 7pm start makes this an early gig and an easy way to keep the Bank Holiday atmosphere going before Tuesday’s return to work. Tickets purchased at the door at the inflation-busting pay what you can price!
