THE COMMUNITY of Rathanna were out in their droves recently to enjoy their first ever village day. The day offered something for everyone with lots of activities for the youngsters to enjoy and also an opportunity to reminisce on times past for the older members of the community.

 “We were so blessed with the weather on the day, there was an amazing community spirit and great to see all the volunteers and the various different committees in the area coming together to be part of it,” enthused Eric Osborne, a member of the organising committee. “It was a free event with plenty to entertain everyone,” he added.

Among the activities were a myriad of local craft stalls with all sorts of wares and wonderful traditional music throughout the day performed by Reelig the local Music Generation group, the Wexford Mummers, Keeley Shaw and Seamus O’Brien.

Facepainting, a magician and the hugely popular wacky races saw some of Rathanna’s youngest residents take to the tracing track on their cars and tractors with gusto!

A penalty shoot-out, hang tough and high jump saw lots of participants get involved while individual races ensured that no one went home empty handed.

Another hugely popular attraction was the animals’ petty corner with miniature donkeys and pigmy goats a massive hit with all. Rathanna Village Day also welcomed a vintage display with all sorts of tractors and engines from times past creating lots of interest. “We closed off the village, so it was very safe for everyone. It was a great opportunity for everyone to come together and catch up,” said Eric.
