From one legendary venue to the other, the band Big Mama’s Door played a sellout gig in Carlow recently.

Playing an eclectic mix of swing, jazz, rhythm and blues, the band has performed in such legendary venues as Ronnie Scott’s in London and now, finally, the Club d’Art in Pembroke, Carlow.

“They were just fantastic. It was joyous to hear them play swing, blues, jazz. I was gobsmacked by them, to be honest. I had the exact right number of people here in the club. Everyone had a great time, so happy days,” said bon vivant and owner of Club d’Art, Bernard Jennings.

The band was on a mini tour and left the Carlow gig to last to make it even more special. It could have something to do with their lead singer’s connection to the town as band member Fiona McElroy’s mother had a pub on Dublin Street called Peggy’s Place years ago.

The venue will next host a play and a poetry competition during the Fringe festival on the August bank holiday weekend. For further information and tickets, go to https://madeincarlow.shop/carlow-fringe-arts-festival.
