Killeshin booked their spot in Sunday’s KCLR Carlow Shield semi-final where they’ll face St. Fiacc’s after victory over St. Pat’s. They didn’t have it all their own way though and Pat’s will feel like they left it behind them; it was a scrappy game for a lot of the first half. In the second half, Pat’s dominated possession but couldn’t find a way back into the game. They were wasteful in front of goal, with several chances going wide and some being saved by the Killeshin ‘keeper. Take nothing away from Killeshin though, they took their chances when they had them and for the most part, and defended staunchly.
Pat’s controlled the early stages. Dean Kelly hit a free from the left with two minutes gone over the bar. A minute later, Callum Warfield should have given Pat’s the lead when he skipped past defenders down the left hand side but he couldn’t control his effort and hit it wide and over on the far side as he couldn’t control the ball.
With eight minutes gone, Pat’s took the lead in bizarre circumstances. A Niels Hlukaku corner from the left was hit to the back post where ball bounced around the box before Jan Flejszar knocked a ball in and the Killeshin ‘keeper got a hand to it, but fumbled it and it somehow went into the bottom right hand corner.
With 15 minutes gone, Killeshin levelled when Pat’s were caught napping at the back. A Felipe Modesto cross from the right was hit in by Jeffrey Mannion coming in at the back post. Dean Kelly hit a corner from the right just before the half hour mark. Shortly after a Kelly free from the left was hit into the ‘keeper by Warfield. On the stroke of half-time, a Kelly free from the right was hit off the wall. In stoppage time, Evan Lowry went close, putting an effort wide on the left. Dawid Pawlowicz hit an effort towards the bottom right hand corner after Pat’s gave the ball straight to him but Jamie Wall parried it away. A Modesto corner from the right was headed in by Lowry to give Killeshin the lead at half-time.
Pat’s came out fighting in the second half. Four minutes in, Hlukaku hit a corner from the left was hit short into Joe Gordon from the edge of the box but his effort was blocked and cleared. Six minutes later, a Gordon free was hit short into Raveli Kilonda who found Warfield who played in Chris Gaul on the left but he couldn’t finish as his effort was deflected across the box. Just after the hour mark, a Warfield free from the left was hit off the wall with a Hlukaku cross being hit wide on the far side. Warfield had a free from the left saved with Lord Afrifa’s rebound parried away. A Hlukaku corner from the right was cleared. With 20 minutes to go, a Flejszar effort was saved. Four minutes later, an Ednilson Pires long range effort from the right was hit over the bar. Warfield down the right was played into Emmanuel Emeka Ejmede who missed the ball for a tap in. With ten minutes to go, a Warfield free from the left was hit just over the bar. Neto Luiz De Paula hit an effort from distance wide on the right. Emeka Ejmede found himself 1 on 1 but put his effort wide on the right.
With seven minutes to go, a Hlukaku cross from the right was hit into the box but nobody was on the end of it and the ball was cleared. Two minutes later, Afrifa han an effort from the left saved. With two minutes to go, a Liam Byrne corner from the right was hit into Afrifa who hit his effort wide across the box from the right. In stoppage time, Afrifa hit an effort wide on the right. Felipe Modesto should have put the game to bed for Killeshin who got in behind Jamie Wall in the Pat’s goal but hit his effort on the left wide. Killeshin did make it 3-1 as Ricardo Maranhao hit an effort from the right of the box into the far corner. St. Pat’s pulled one back as Warfield got taken down in the box and referee Michael Murphy pointed to the spot. Warfield did hit his effort into the left hand side of the goal. Kilonda hit a long ball into Afrifa who hit wide on the left.
