Carlow’s Wexford FC contingent are celebrating this evening after they helped their team to a dramatic penalty shoot-out win over Bohemians in the Women's All-Island Cup at Ferrycarrig Park.
Kylie Murphy, Lauren Dwyer and Aoife Kelly all played their part as Wexford came from 1-0 down at half time to win the game.
Against an almost gale force wind, Wexford were under constant pressure in the first half but the eventual Player of the Match Dwyer marshalling the defence, all that Bohs had to show for their dominance was Alannah McEvoy’s 33rd minute strike.
Wexford came into the game in the second half and deservedly equalised through Ellen Molloy in the 66th minute.
After captain Murphy was substituted, Dwyer took over the captain’s armband and showed true leadership qualities with a couple of excellent blocks on McEvoy, even though she seemed to be carrying an injury as the game wore on.
With no further goals, the game went straight to a penalty shoot out to decide the winner.
Aoife Kelly, who was part of the Shamrock Rovers team that lost last year’s final to Galway, confidently stuck away the second penalty as Wexford went on to score all five of their kicks in a 5-3 shoot out win.
The win sparked great celebrations among the home support in the 2,201 attendance as the players basked in the glow of a famous win as Wexford became the first club to win the SSE Airtricity Women's Premier Division, Sports Direct Women's FAI Cup, WNL Cup, WNL Shield and, now, Women's All-Island Cup.
Tuesday’s edition of The Carow Nationalist will feature quotes from all three players after this great success.
