Sewage spill in housing estate is ‘rancid’

A MAJOR sewage spill on a housing estate in Carlow town has gone untreated for days and is hazardous to those living there, according to local residents.
The spillage occurred next to a gate known locally as ‘swinging gate’ in Burrin Manor housing estate and has been ongoing since Friday 25 September.
The gate connects the housing estate to the Burrin river walkway and is used by local residents and members of the public.
Local resident and dog walker Andy Yule said: “It is just wrong that that can lie there for nearly a week in the middle of a housing estate and it’s just raw shit. It’s all drying in. There’s old dried-up toilet roll and condoms in among it.” He described the smell of the sewage as “yuck” and “rancid.” Andy is especially concerned as “there’s tons of kids playing around there.” He said that he called Uisce Éireann but they were “not really bothered about the fact” that there is raw sewage spilling into the open.
“It stinks and I will be up there this afternoon and I can guarantee that nobody is going to have gone there,” Andy said.
