IN A BLEND of faith, community and charitable giving, Staplestown church hosted its annual Plough Sunday service on 16 February, drawing a capacity crowd in support of the Éist Cancer Support Centre.

The service, presided over by Reverend Paul Fitzpatrick of Carlow Union of Parishes, welcomed former Green Party leader Reverend Trevor Sargent as guest speaker.

Notable attendees included cathaoirleach Fergal Browne, MEP Cynthia Ní Mhurchú, TD Catherine O'Callaghan and cllr Jim Deane.

In his address, Canon Sargent emphasised environmental stewardship, focusing on biodiversity and the importance of bridging divides between farming and non-farming communities. He particularly highlighted the pressing issues of climate change and food waste reduction.

The service, which included prayers for land, livestock and safety, held special significance as it remembered those affected by agricultural, road and industrial accidents. Service booklets were produced in memory of the recently deceased Edgar McFadden, with his family, led by Evelyne McFadden, playing a central role in organising the event.

Staplestown parishioners contributed to the success of the day, said Rev Fitzpatrick, managing parking, decorations and post-service hospitality. Musical accompaniment was provided by organist Sena Harenberg, while readings were delivered by Evelyne McFadden, Maureen Byrne and Valerie James. Éist Cancer Support Centre representative Anne Marie Peters expressed gratitude for the €835 raised.
