Shannon Doogue and Emmet Jones have curated a playlist of music exclusively by artists and musicians from Carlow

IMAGINE walking into a record shop where all the music is from Co Carlow?  That’s the idea behind the latest project from Emmet Jones and Shannon Doogue because they’ve curated the music of bands and musicians from Carlow and compiled them in the Carlow Music Playlist, which is available on Spotify.

"The whole idea was to create a central location for people to find music that’s been created in Carlow,” said Emmet. Up-and-coming bands like Asophonics, Sittingroom and Dara Eaton and the Patsys, through to more established acts like Tumbling Dice and Beef Supreme are all nestled together on one handy list.

More than 35 bands and artists are on the playlist so far, but the number is growing as more and more people hear about it. Emmet’s idea is to introduce people to these artists, which they’ll explore further by maybe going to see them play live.

He has also approached shops and bars across Carlow town to see if they’ll feature the playlist over their PA systems, with many willing to give it a go. Among those establishments which are using the playlist are the likes of Scraggs Alley, Tully’s bar, Lambert’s coffee shop and Mokka coffee shop, while the Fairgreen Shopping Centre is another big supporter.

“If you put the music in front of someone, at least then they have a choice. They have the information there in front of them. People say all the time that there’s nothing happening in Carlow, but that’s not true. If you’re caught in an echo chamber on social media, then of course you’re not getting local music. This is an opportunity for people to discover new bands and new music and even the music from bands like Caladh Nua, that aren’t around anymore,” continued Emmet. “If people go to hear music (in venues), then the hospitality sector will benefit, too. We’re passionate about providing a platform for musicians, but if pubs are giving up space, they need a crowd. There’s no point in some fella in the corner playing Ed Sheerin to no-one,” said Emmet.
