Community spirit shines at Rathanna Village Day

RATHANNA annual village day proved another success as large numbers of local residents and visitors enjoyed glorious sunshine for a day packed with entertainment, community spirit and family fun.
More than 20 stalls offered an impressive selection of food, handmade crafts and artwork, giving those in attendance an opportunity to support local businesses, artists and community groups.
Adrian Ryan provided the soundtrack to the day, while Ballycullane Mummers brought plenty of laughter to proceedings with their lively performances.
One of the main attractions was John Doran’s demonstration of traditional oat threshing using his restored 1947 Crichton Mill, giving visitors a glimpse into farming practices of old.
Sporting activities ran throughout the afternoon, with competitors of all ages taking part in the crossbar challenge, foot darts and the hang tough challenge. The ever-popular children’s races were also a highlight, as the youngest visitors showed great enthusiasm and determination.
The day culminated with the annual Reeling in the Sheep race, which was cheered on by hundreds of spectators and provided a fitting end to another memorable village day.
Proceeds from the day were presented to two deserving charities following the event. Donations of €1,000 each were made to Miriam Murphy from Holy Angels Day Care Centre and Lorna McGrath from Éist Cancer Support Centre.
Further donations were also presented by the committee to local organisations in recognition of their ongoing contribution to the community, with Borris Men’s Shed, Rathanna Village Group and the 3rd Carlow Borris Scout Group all acknowledged for the valuable role they play in community life.
The committee also expressed its appreciation to all the volunteers and sponsors whose hard work and generosity helped make the event a success.
The committee also acknowledged the generosity of local farmers, many of whom provided the use of their land for event activities and car parking throughout the day.
