Former governor of Mountjoy, John Lonergan, to speak in Rathvilly

JOHN Lonergan, former governor of Mountjoy Prison, will deliver an insightful talk Building and sustaining a community on Monday 4 November at 8pm in the function room of Lawlor’s Bar, Rathvilly.

The event is being hosted by The Schoolhouse Community and Enterprise Committee as part of its campaign to raise awareness and support for the redevelopment of the old Phoenix Centre in Rathvilly into a community hub.

Founded in 2020, The Schoolhouse Community and Enterprise Committee is dedicated to transforming the former Phoenix Centre into a vibrant hub for the local community. With plans to offer services, activities and spaces for social interaction, education and enterprise development, the project is poised to make a lasting impact.

The committee has applied for and secured funding through the Rural Regeneration Fund, with the support of Carlow Co Council, but they must raise matching funds to bring the project to life.

John Lonergan, known for his work in prison reform and community engagement, will share his experiences and insights on how communities can come together to build stronger, more sustainable futures. His talk will focus on the importance of local involvement, collaboration and leadership in creating positive social change.

The event is free to attend, but donations will be accepted at the door, with proceeds going towards the redevelopment project. There will also be a free raffle and refreshments for guests.

The committee hopes that the evening will not only raise funds but also inspire greater community participation in their vision to create a space that will benefit the entire area.
