THE 2024 Carlow Ploughing Match took place recently under clear skies on the lands of the Hughes family in Fenniscourt. With the sun shining and the soil in perfect condition for ploughing, the event drew a competitive field of world-class ploughmen.

Among the participants were three world champions, European champions and Five Nations champions, making for a thrilling competition that attracted top talent from near and far. Carlow’s annual match is a highly respected event in ploughing circles with competitors travelling from as far as Wales and Northern Ireland. Judges came from Donegal, Cork and Offaly, while spectators from as far as West Cork came to witness some of the best ploughing talent in the world.

Representing Carlow, Seán Murphy competed in the vintage trailed class, Liam O’Reilly took part in the vintage hydraulic class, and Brian Kelly competed in the classic class.

 Richard Keegan emerged victorious in the three-furrow conventional category, while John Murphy triumphed over rival Steve Tracey in the U28 conventional class. On home turf, world champion Eamonn Tracey claimed the Senior Conventional title, with his son Seán Tracey finishing in third place.
