Ex-boyfriend took car and crashed it

Carlow Courthouse
A WOMAN who came before Carlow District Court on driving-related offences told Judge Geraldine Carthy that her ex-boyfriend took her car without her permission and crashed it. Kate Edel Morgan, 105 The Laurels, Carlow was in court to face offences of driving without insurance or a valid NCT and of failing to produce documents at her local garda station. The offences arose after 32-year-old Ms Morgan was stopped by Garda Bernard Graham at Siver Pines, Carlow on 8 February 2024.
Garda Graham told the court that he stopped Ms Morgan on that date and asked her to produce her insurance and NCT cert, but there was no record of her doing so. He added that her car was damaged with a broken windscreen and it also had a bald tyre.
Ms Morgan told Judge Carthy that her ex-boyfriend had taken her car without her permission when he was drunk and had crashed it, causing €5,000 worth of damage. She said that she was retrieving the vehicle when she was stopped by Garda Graham on the day in question.
Under cross-examination by Inspector Tom Jones, Ms Morgan said she hadn’t reported the theft to the gardaí because she was afraid of her ex-boyfriend.
Judge Carthy said that she would spare Ms Morgan a disqualification on the insurance charge but did fine her €300, with the other offences taken in consideration.
