30kph urban speed limit for Carlow receives approval

ALL three municipal districts in Carlow – Carlow town, Tullow and Bagenalstown – have approved a plan to introduce a new urban speed limit of 30kph in town centres, housing estates and built-up urban cores. The proposal will now be put before the next county-wide council meeting to be discussed and voted on.
The votes follow public consultation on lowering the speed limit that took place over the summer.
Back in June when the public consultation was launched, Orla Barrett, senior engineer with the council, said that the decision to lower speed limits had come from the Road Safety Authority’s goal to see that no-one dies on Irish roads by 2050.
At the time, independent cllr Charlie Murphy said: “I just have a little problem with the 30kph speed limit – it’s awful slow. We can put in all the speed limits we want in the world, but, again, it’s an issue of enforcement.”
As the by-laws have been drafted, the proposal will now go through a full statutory consultation process. The council must implement the reduced speed limits by 31 March 2027.
