Drop-off your old and unwanted electrical items for free

There's a series of free WEEE drop-off days

AN unwanted fridge or washing machine taking up space? Old laptop or hairdryer gathering dust? Well, the perfect opportunity to enjoy a spring clean is on the way.

Carlow Co Council, in partnership with WEEE Ireland, the national organisation responsible for managing the recycling of waste electrical and electronic equipment in Ireland, has announced a series of free WEEE drop-off days in communities across the county over the coming weeks.

WEEE stands for waste electrical and electronic equipment and refers to discarded electrical or electronic devices, which means any item that would normally require a plug or a battery. These items often contain hazardous materials such as mercury, so appropriate recycling is crucial to prevent environmental damage and recover valuable resources like metals and plastics.

Householders, organisations, schools and businesses across the county can bring any household waste electrical items from fridges to phones, laptops to lawnmowers, toys to power tools and everything in between to one of the five drop-off events running from the end of June to the second week in July.

The schedule of free WEEE drop-off days is: Tullow, Saturday 28 June, 10am to 4pm, Tullow Mart, Tullow Livestock Sales (R93 E431); Bagenalstown, Tuesday 1 July, 10am to 4pm, Rejuice IT, Unit 4-5, Bagenalstown Industrial Park (R21 E297); Hacketstown, Thursday 3 July, 10am to 4pm, Hacketstown Fire Station (R93 YX47); Borris, Tuesday 8 July, 10am to 4pm, Borris Mart (R95AY07); and Carlow, Thursday 10 July, 10am to 4pm, Leinster Co-Op Marts Ltd (R93 VOR1).

“Electrical waste is one of the fastest-growing waste streams globally,” said cllr Fergal Browne, cathaoirleach of Carlow Co Council “By ensuring you dispose of all of your old electrical items correctly and reusing components and materials, we are supporting the circular economy. We also reduce the need for raw material extraction and energy-intensive manufacturing. It’s not just about getting rid of old gadgets; it’s about giving them a second life and protecting the planet in the process.”

Don’t be disappointed if you miss these dates as you can recycle all of your old WEEE for free throughout the year at Powerstown civic amenity site.
