Given a suspended sentence and put off the road for six years

The motorist was found driving without insurance
A MOTORIST who pleaded guilty to driving without insurance for the third time was put off the road for six years and received a suspended sentence when he appeared before Carlow District Court last week.
John Meaney, 59 Friar’s Green, Tullow Road, Carlow pleaded guilty to driving without tax or insurance when he was stopped by gardaí on Staplestown Road, Carlow on 13 October last.
The court heard that it was the defendant’s third offence for driving without insurance and that he had 11 previous convictions, five of which were for road traffic matters.
Solicitor Joe Farrell told Judge Geraldine Carthy that 28-year-old Mr Meaney had “taken a chance” when he drove that day. He added that his client had “shattered his leg” in an accident and asked her to spare him a custodial sentence.
Judge Carthy then sentenced Mr Meaney to four months in prison, which she suspended fully for 12 months, while she also put him off the road for six years.
