A CARLOW man pleaded guilty to the possession of 48 Xyclose tablets at Carlow District Court.

The court heard how on 18 August at 4.30pm, gardaí observed Shane Kehoe, 113 St Mary’s Park, Carlow bleeding from his nose in Carlow town.

When approached by gardaí, Mr Kehoe would not say what had happened to him. The gardaí observed a strong smell of cannabis coming from Mr Kehoe’s person and searched him, whereupon they found 48 tablets.

After being cautioned, Mr Kehoe (28) made full admission to possessing the tablets for personal use without a prescription.

Mr Kehoe has 37 previous offences, seven of which relate to the misuse of drugs.

His most recent offence was at Carlow District Court on 18 July 2025 for possessing drugs, for which he was fined €200.

Joseph Farrell for the defence said that his client is trying to address his issues the best he can and that Mr Kehoe should get credit for his guilty plea. Mr Farrell went on to say that Mr Kehoe’s sister had come to court to support him and that he was someone who worked when not in custody and who wants to work.

Mr Farrell ended his client’s defence by asking the court to “spare him if you can.” Judge Geraldine Carthy ordered a probation report to be complied on Mr Kehoe and set a date in June to go over its findings. She finished by saying that she was “strongly considering a custodial sentence” for Mr Kehoe.
