A CARLOW man who climbed onto the roof of his apartment and threatened to jump during a tense stand-off with gardaí has been convicted and fined at Carlow District Court. John Patrick Maguire of 39 Springfield Park, Carlow appeared before Judge Geraldine Carthy in connection with a section 4 public order offence arising from an incident on Montgomery Street, Carlow town on 4 April.

The court heard that at 6pm that evening, gardaí received a report of a male in the area allegedly armed with a crowbar. When officers arrived at the scene, Mr Maguire (38) was acting in an erratic manner and failed to engage with them. He appeared intoxicated, with glassy eyes and slurred speech.

Mr Maguire then retreated into his apartment before climbing onto the roof at the rear of the property, where he threatened to jump if the gardaí did not leave.

Officers proceeded around the back of the building, where they witnessed Mr Maguire jumping off the wall of the property and into an adjacent garden. He was located, arrested and brought to Carlow Garda Station.

Judge Carthy convicted Mr Maguire and imposed a fine of €200, to be paid within 90 days.

The judge added a pointed remark from the bench: “He is very fortunate he’s not in front of the court on further charges.”
