Carlow county facing lifeguard shortage

The shortage was raised at a recent Bagenalstown MD meeting

AT the May meeting of Carlow Co Council, Labour cllr Willie Quinn raised the issue of the shortage of lifeguards in the county. “I think we are okay for this year, but from this year on there is a major problem with lifeguards,” cllr Quinn said.

He said that this shortage had been brought up at a recent Bagenalstown Municipal District council. He said that the shortage concerned him, as there are several places in the county that need to have lifeguards during the summer months to keep people safe.

Director of services Pádraig O’Gorman agreed with cllr Quinn that the county would soon be facing a lifeguard shortage. He said that the council might do something with schools to promote the summer job next year, as more people needed to be trained and qualified to do it.

Fine Gael’s Paul Doogue suggested that the council should talk to the swimming clubs in Carlow town and Bagenalstown to find lifeguards.
