COUNCIL members at the monthly meeting of Carlow Municipal District were given information regarding a section 183, which is disposal of a freehold notice at 52a Burrin Street, Carlow, R93Y725.

Mayor Fintan Phelan excused himself from chairing the matter due to his home being located close to the property under discussion.

Members heard that the property is to be sold on the open market with the agreement of councillors at the next meeting of the county council. A specific fund of €8.5 million has been allocated by the Department of Housing, Planning and Local Government towards regeneration, with the idea being that the council will compulsorily purchase order properties, update them, tidy up title and dispose of them.

Other properties will also be refurbished for housing. The money that is acquired from the sale of the property will be placed back into a rolling fund and used to buy other premises.

Cllr Andrea Dalton questioned how the council determines what “we want to turn over and what is to be used for housing”. She was informed that a lot of the council’s decisions would be based on costs to works as “some of them are too much for us to take on”, according to acting senior executive engineer Cian Madden.

“The idea of this is that it is a rolling fund: we get our money back and we go on (to others). As it stands at the minute, we should make a small profit,” concluded Mr Madden.
