33 Carlow sports clubs to share €4.8 million in funding
The funding came in the latest round of the Sports Capital and Equipment Programme
CO CARLOW has received a bumper €4.8 million in funding under the latest round of the Sports Capital and Equipment Programme.
A total of 33 clubs, teams, schools and local authority facilities received the good news today, with individual grants ranging from a couple of thousand euros for equipment upgrades right up to €365,000 for the GAA’s Centre of Excellence.
It was good news, too, for Tullow & South Leinster Tennis & Sports Club, which received €365,504 for phase four of its development masterplan, and St Leo’s College, which received €276,249 for phase two of its hockey pitch development.
Each of the recipients indicated specific purposes for their funding application, with the development of walking tracks, enhancing security, floodlighting, fencing, improving energy efficiencies or targeting increase participation among the purposes identified.
This latest funding follows on on from the 15 clubs that received their equipment-only grants back in May.
Welcoming the allocation, deputy Jennifer Murnane O’Connor said: “I was particularly pleased to see €365,504 in funding awarded to Carlow Rising GAA Centre of Excellence.
“There is a tremendous sense of community that comes from engagement with sports and their associated organisations. Ensuring that we have the right equipment in place and that adequate facilities are provided is key to supporting people of all abilities to get, and to stay, involved,” she said.
Minister Malcolm Noonan also welcomed Carlow’s €4.5m in funding.
“The sheer scale of this round of the Sports Capital and Equipment Programme should mean that all valid applications received have resulted in positive allocation decisions,” he said.
“Right across Carlow, that means 33 clubs, teams, schools and local authority facilities are getting very good news today. This is really great news for sporting organisations across the county, and for their members, athletes and volunteers,” added the minister.
