TEAMS from across the country will descend on Co Carlow on Sunday 1 September as Rathvilly GAA hosts a football tournament for U12 boys and girls.

The event has been organised by Carlow Rose Caoimhe Deering to support her local club, in particular the U12 team she coaches, while also giving juvenile teams the chance of a great day out doing what they love.

“This is our second year to have the tournament; last year, it was girls only but this year we’ll have boys’ teams, too, and we’re delighted that the Talbot Hotel has come on board again as sponsors,” she added.

“The Talbot Hotel have been very good to me as Rose and also to the tournament so I am so grateful to them for sponsoring the tournament again this year,” she added.

Lots of support

The tournament will welcome teams from Carlow, Kildare, Laois, Wicklow and Dublin with eight boys’ and eight girls’ teams taking part. There's also plenty of support from all in the Rathvilly club, with volunteers helping out with the smooth running of the day.

“It should be a great day and a great way of promoting football,” said Caoimhe.

Funds raised from the day will be put back into Rathvilly GAA and also help to fund a team-bonding day for Rathvilly’s U12s at the end of the season, another occasion all are looking forward to.

Caoimhe will hold onto the title of Carlow Rose until March 2025, as Carlow is among a number of smaller counties that host their county Rose of Tralee competition every second year.

“I get to hold onto it for another few months,” smiled Caoimhe; however, she did head down to Tralee to be part of this year’s festival last week and catch up with her fellow Roses from the 2023 competition.
