MAKING a connection with nature and contemplating our place in the universe is the idea behind a wonderful new garden trail in An Gairdín Beo.

Called the Cosmic Walk, it was launched recently when members of the public and various groups were invited to participate in the walk. Students from St Leo’s College and St Mary’s Academy CBS, along with other guests, played music and read poems as the contingent moved through the garden.

Michael Long, who advised the board of directors of An Gairdín Beo about how to create the Cosmic Walk, explained to the guests what the whole idea behind it was. Fourteen signs are dotted along the walk, charting the creation of the universe.

“The Cosmic Walk is in a quiet part of the garden and people are invited to take their time walking through it,” explained John McHugh, a director of the garden.

“The signs explain how the world came into being and how we, as humans, fit into it. It’s in such a quiet area of the garden that it’s a great place to reflect on nature. It’s a nice way to slow down and contemplate nature. It shows that we’re part of the natural world and not the boss of it – that we’re really just a speck in a large cosmos. It's a big thing to do in a small garden."
