During Seachtain na Gaeilge, a fortnight of national activities that aims to promote and celebrate all things Irish, the páistí in the Gaelscoil were busy singing, dancing, acting, painting and playing.

While they always carry out their activities and classes as Gaeilge, during Seachtain na Gaeilge, the range of activities included a céili, a quiz, putting on a play, sports, singing and storytelling.

“It’s such a busy time, but the children absolutely love it. Seachtain na Gaeilge for us is a celebration of everything we teach in our school, not just the Irish language but our culture, too,” said principal Ruth Ní Chearbhalláin.

Among the many activities that the children took part in was a spraoicheist (table quiz), puc fada (hurling) and a féile scoil drámaíochta (school drama competition). The youngsters who took part in the latter staged a production of Aladdin in Visual and were so good they got through not only to the regional finals in Mullingar but they’re now through to the national finals. Other events included a bricfeasta (breakfast) as Gaeilge, seisiún ceoil (music session), an art competition and a teddy bears’ picnic.

The fortnight of jam-packed activities culminated in a céili mór in the school playground, where the pupils were taught the traditional brush dance, or rince na scuab, under the expert tutelage of Muinteoir Mairéad.

“It was a very busy time for us and it was all great fun. Seachtain na Gaeilge has been growing in schools for the past number of years and we in the Gaelscoileanna really go for it. It’s great fun,” said Ruth.
