“IRELAND’S neutrality is not up for grabs” – so said Sinn Féin’s newly-elected Ireland South MEP Kathleen Funchion.

Speaking to
at the end of her first week in the European Commission, Kathleen said: “As I pledged during the election campaign, I voted against the re-election of Ursula von der Leyen as commission president. Her time in office has been bad for Ireland. Her full support of Israel has been disgraceful as the people of Palestine are subjected to a horrific genocide. While in office, several of her decisions have moved towards EU militarisation and undermined Ireland’s neutrality.”Kathleen was one of 284 members to vote against the re-election of Ms von der Leyen as commission president. However, she won a second five-year term after receiving 401 votes in the 720-member chamber.
Reflecting on her week, Kathleen said she “has hit the ground running” in what she describes as “an exciting and incredible experience to get to represent Ireland South. Throughout the election campaign, I listened to people right across Ireland South, which includes one of my home counties of Carlow. They made it clear to me that they want an MEP who will work hard and deliver for the area. That is what I am committed to doing. This week, I have hit the ground running and will be using my voice in Europe to deliver for ordinary workers and families on the issues that matter to them."
As a Dáil deputy for Carlow/Kilkenny, Kathleen chaired the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth and is keen to continue her work in the area of children’s rights. “I got the opportunity to meet two children’s rights organisations – one that specialises in beating childhood cancer and trying to work on this on an EU level.”
Last week also saw her become a member of the Regional Development Committee, where she will be seeking “fair and balanced investment” for the southeast. Meanwhile, she says, her experience as a trade unionist will be put to good use on the Employment Rights Committee, ensuring that workers' rights “are strengthened and enhanced”.
