Tullow Macra jive contest to mark 80th anniversary

TULLOW Macra will mark its 80th anniversary with a celebratory dance and jiving competition in the Woodford Dolmen Hotel on Saturday 25 April.

The dance will begin at 8pm and the entry fee is €20, with finger food provided.

There are three main prizes on offer, with a €250 voucher plus dinner for two in the Dáil restaurant, sponsored by minister of state Jennifer Murnane O’Connor for the best jiver on the night.

Other prizes include another dinner for two in the Dáil restaurant sponsored by Catherine Callaghan TD for second place and a €100 voucher for Lamberts Hardware, Hacketstown for third place.

Anyone who does not make the top three will be entered into a draw for a hamper, kindly sponsored by Broughan Engineering.

Established in 1946, two years after the Macra na Feirme organisation was first founded, the Tullow club has helped farmers and young people from the area to play an active role in their community, offering new opportunities and experiences in a fun, inclusive and supportive environment.

The club has gone from strength to strength over the years and produced many influential people across business, politics, sport and other farming organisations, including current deputy president of the Irish Farmers Association Alice Doyle.

Ms Doyle was the first woman to be elected as deputy president of the IFA and, in addition to her former membership of Tullow Macra, she also served as county chairperson, national secretary and a member of the agricultural affairs committee of Macra na Feirme.

Chairperson of the Tullow Macra 80th anniversary committee, Patrick Jordan, said they felt the best way to celebrate the occasion was by hosting a dance and jiving competition and expressed his hope that current, former and new members will join them on the night.
