In a thrilling, hard-fought encounter, Mill Celtic emerged victorious over Killester Doncarney, securing a 4-2 penalty shootout win after a 1-1 draw in normal time. This nail-biting clash demonstrated the resilience and determination of Mill Celtic, who will now represent the Carlow District Football League with pride in the upcoming Leinster final.
The game began with Mill Celtic asserting their dominance. They looked sharp from the first whistle, and after 15 minutes, their efforts paid off. Mag Nolan delivered a brilliant pass to Dee Byrne, who controlled the ball expertly before firing a powerful left-footed shot into the top corner of the net. It was a strike that left the Killester goalkeeper with no chance and sent Mill Celtic into a deserved lead.
However, Killester Doncarney quickly found their rhythm and began to control the latter stages of the first half. Despite their dominance, they were unable to break down Mill’s defence, thanks to the outstanding performances from goalkeeper Geraldine Norton, who made several crucial saves. Norton was a rock at the back, denying Killester's best efforts and keeping her side ahead as the half-time whistle blew.
In the second half, Killester came out with renewed energy and immediately put Mill Celtic under pressure. Their persistence paid off in the 60th minute when they were awarded a free kick just outside the box. The shot was well-struck, and although Norton managed to get a hand to it, the power behind the strike was too much, and the ball found its way into the back of the net. The equaliser set the stage for a tense final 30 minutes, as both teams fought fiercely for the winning goal.
With both sides creating few chances, the game grew increasingly intense, with neither team willing to give an inch. Mill Celtic's defence, led by Catherine Dempsey, Fia Murphy, Pam Grufferty, and Jackie Byrne, put in a fantastic performance to keep Killester at bay. Their solid defending ensured the game remained level, and as the final whistle blew, extra time loomed.
In extra time, the pressure was palpable, but neither side could find the breakthrough, and penalties were inevitable. Mill Celtic were calm and composed when it mattered most. Maria O'Callaghan, Fia Murphy, and Rachel Whealn all confidently converted their spot kicks, while goalkeeper Geraldine Norton became the hero, saving two of Killester's penalties. It was then up to Dee Byrne to seal the win for Mill Celtic and she did so in emphatic fashion, slotting home the decisive penalty to send her team through to the Leinster final.
Best on the day for Mill Celtic were Rachel O’Neil, Laura Miley, and Rachel Sarah Hogan, who each played pivotal roles in the team’s success. Their determination, skill, and unwavering commitment throughout the match were a testament to the strength of this Mill Celtic side.

Mill Celtic have shown themselves to be a force to be reckoned with, and they will now carry the flag for the Carlow District Football League in the upcoming Leinster final. With a blend of experienced heads and young talent, they are ready for the challenge that lies ahead. The Carlow soccer community will no doubt be behind them every step of the way as they chase glory in final.
