Woman stole basketful of Yankee candles from Carlow discount store

€472 worth of candles were stolen

Basketful of Yankee candles A 23-YEAR-OLD Tallaght woman has been sentenced to seven months in prison following a theft from a Carlow discount store in 2020. Kathleen Connors, 48 Glenshane Grove, Tallaght appeared before Carlow District Court on charges contrary to section 4 of the Criminal Justice (Theft and Fraud Offences) Act.

A garda report detailed that on 30 June 2020 Ms Connors took €472 worth of Yankee candles and a shopping basket worth €120 without permission from Homesavers discount shop at Penny Lane, Carlow.

The court heard that on 22 September 2020 the defendant was arrested, detained and questioned in relation to the matter. She has one previous conviction from 2020 for a road traffic matter.

Defending solicitor Joe Farrell told the court that Ms Connors had just turned 18 at the time of the offence. She now has two young children and is expecting another. Mr Farrell said his client “would like the opportunity to pay this back”.

Judge Geraldine Carthy, taking into account that two bench warrants had been previously issued for Ms Connors and considering the nature of the matter, imposed a custodial sentence of seven months.

Mr Farrell asked for fixed recognisance, which the judge set at €500 own bond, with a €250 cash lodgement.
