A service to honour UN soldiers who died while serving overseas took place in Askea recently.

The event was organised by the Irish United Nationalist Veterans Association Post 29.
The group held their annual mass in the Holy Family Church in Askea before families laid wreaths at the monument outside the church.

The ground for the monument was provided by Fr Tom Little, and it was unveiled around 2007.

There was a strong turnout by local public representatives as well including Deputy Catherine Callaghan and Minister Jennifer Murnane O’Connor.

The Irish United Nations Veterans Association was formed in 1990 to honour and remember veterans who have died in service overseas and care for others who have had difficulties.

Headquartered in Arbor Hill, the Irish United Veterans Association are also building a national training centre which is expected to open later this year.
