WITH Halloween just around the corner, Dogs Trust Ireland has issued top tips for dog owners to ensure pups have a spook-free season.
The charity advises keeping dogs indoors if fireworks are going off, or to keep dogs on a lead if they must be brought out.
Dogs Trust also recommend making sure your dog is wearing a collar with an ID tag attached so you can be quickly reunited should they get a fright and escape. Finally, you should ensure there is a closed door between you and your dog when opening the front door to any trick or treaters.
Dogs Trust also reminds dog owners to beware of the toxic threat Halloween treats pose to dogs. Chocolate, raisins, grapes and sweets containing xylitol are all poisonous and should be kept well out of reach of dogs, and children should be reminded that Halloween treats are not to be shared with furry friends.
Niamh Curran-Kelly, veterinary and welfare manager with Dog Trust Ireland said: “Halloween can be one of the worst times of year for dogs who do not understand what fireworks are, or when they will end, and sadly they seem to be starting earlier every year, prolonging the fear.
“If your dog is showing any signs of being worried by fireworks, we recommend walking them earlier in the day when fireworks are less likely. And when you’re at home, close the curtains and turn up the volume on the TV to block them out. It’s also a good idea to feed your dog earlier in the day, as some will refuse to eat when they’re feeling afraid.
“Now is also a good time to have a chat with your vet about your dog’s fear. They will be able to check them for any underlying medical conditions which might be increasing their levels of anxiety and may prescribe them medication if necessary.”
