Sharp increase in rents in Carlow
The average cost of renting a two-bedroom house in Carlow is up 24% from this time last year
RENT prices in County Carlow have risen sharply in the last year, according to a report by Daft.ie.
The average cost of renting a two-bedroom house in Carlow is now €1,572, up 24% from this time last year, while renting a two-bedroom apartment will cost you €1,411 on average, an increase of over 8% from last year.
Ronan Lyons, author of the report and professor in economics at Trinity College, said that while there has been recent moderation in rental inflation, the lack of availability means that rents are likely to increase even more in the future.
He outlined: “Supply remains tight and is indeed worsening, with one quarter fewer homes available to rent on November 1 than a year before. Thus, upward pressure on rents is likely to remain.” The report also found that the number of homes available to rent across the entire country has reduced by over one-fifth, with only 1,901 homes available to rent nationwide, while market rents are now two-thirds higher than during the Celtic Tiger period in late 2007.
The report is a stark reminder of the scale of the housing crisis as the government launched its new housing plan this month.
The plan, which is titled , aims to deliver 300,000 new homes by 2030, 72,000 of which are to be social houses.
The government is also planning on reducing the cost of construction through various measures, such as reducing the VAT rate on building apartments.
