Proposed Graiguecullen Lidl has planning permission appealed

New Lidl store planned for Graiguecullen

A DECISION to grant planning permission for a new Lidl in Graiguecullen has been appealed to An Coimisiún Pleanála (ACP).

Lidl had received permission for ‘discount food store’ at the site of the former National Learning Network Centre on the Killeshin Road in Graiguecullen on the Carlow/Laois border.

The appeal was brought to ACP by David and Majella Geoghegan who live next to the site. The individuals had been among a host of locals who had lodged objections on the original planning application, including from local PP Fr John Dunphy and St Fiacc’s House.

The Geoghegans had objected to the store based on “excessive noise pollution” from the mechanical units and delivery trucks and expected traffic volumes along the road. Other issues cited were overshadowing and loss of privacy.

In their objection to when the application was initially assessed by Carlow County Council, St Fiacc’s House said they would also be overshadowed by the proposal, leading to a loss of natural light and would negatively impact their residents. This sentiment was shared by Fr Dunphy in his objection.

The case is due to be decided by 3 November.

Lidl say the proposal will see an investment of €8 million and the creation of 30 new jobs, with a further 100 jobs supported during a six-month construction phase.
