A CARLOW man who stole three pairs of shoes so that he could give them to his brothers was last week sent to prison when he appeared before the local district court. Myles Doran, Browneshill Wood, Carlow admitted to taking the shoes from Shu 4 U on Tullow Street, Carlow on 19 May this year.
Judge Geraldine Carthy noted that Mr Doran (36) was in “an emotional state” in court, to which solicitor Chris Hogan said that he had a difficulty with alcohol and that his relationship with his family had broken down. He added that Mr Doran was now homeless and that he had stolen the shoes so that he could give them to his brothers.
He continued that his client hadn’t come to the attention of gardaí in a while and that “even in a drunken state he was easy to deal with”.
However, Inspector Tom Jones told Judge Carthy that Mr Doran had 19 previous convictions, including for theft, criminal damage and assault.
Judge Carthy noted that a bench warrant had to be issued to bring Mr Doran to court, while she also took into consideration the number of previous convictions he had. She said that a custodial sentence of seven months was the most appropriate sentence for him.
Recognisances were fixed in the event of an appeal.
