Obituary: Martha’s greatest joy in life was her family

The late Martha Duggan

MARTHA DUGGAN (née Shaw), 32 Barrowville, Kilkenny Road and formerly of 3 Court View, Carlow, passed away peacefully at her home on 4 January surrounded by her loving family, following a long illness.

Martha was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend, whose strength, resilience and kindness touched so many lives.

She grew up in St Killian’s Crescent alongside her siblings Paddy, Frank, Olive and Noeleen and the late Betty, Harry, Tom and Jim. She began her working life as an assistant salesperson at Melville’s on Tullow Street before moving to Shaws Department Store.

Later, she and her beloved husband Frank opened Duggan Shoes, where they worked side by side. Her final role was at Planet Ladies Wear, where she remained until 1996.

After a serious road accident, she was unable to return to work, but faced her recovery with incredible determination and never let it define her.

Martha’s greatest joy in life was her family. She was a loving mother to Colin, Mitchell, Allan, Martha Jane, Jennifer and Katie, and a proud grandmother to 20 cherished grandchildren. She nurtured each one with boundless love and support, celebrating their milestones and achievements with immense pride.

She had many passions, but her home, cooking, garden and golf were among her greatest joys. Sunday dinners were a special tradition. Her garden was her sanctuary, full of colour and life, a reflection of the care she poured into everything she did. She also loved her time on the golf course, not just for the sport but for the friendships and stories shared in the clubhouse.

Martha was blessed with a large and loving extended family. Her brothers Paddy and Frank brought joy and laughter to her with their stories and visits, and her family is grateful for the love they shared. She was also fortunate to have lifelong friendships, and heartfelt thanks is extended to Teresa, Noeleen and Olive for their unwavering support and companionship.

In her final months, her family was surrounded by the kindness and dedication of those who cared for her. Their deepest gratitude goes to Dr Wall, the palliative care team and her devoted carers Catherine and Fiona, who were a rock of support.

Martha also shared a special bond with her brother-in-law Fr Oliver, who offered his prayers and guidance from afar. His death on 26 December last was a deep loss, but her family take comfort in knowing that they are now reunited.

Martha’s strength, love and legacy will remain, and she will be deeply missed by her family, who take solace in the memories she has left behind.

May she rest in peace.
