NOEL Alcock from Governey Park, Graiguecullen celebrated the joyous occasion of turning 100 years’ old recently when Beechwood Nursing Home hosted a party for him.
There were delicious canapés and a beautiful cake for Noel and his family to enjoy, while his son Conleth had published a special
s pamphlet outlining his 100-year long life.
Born and raised in Graiguecullen, Noel worked his entire life in Corcoran’s Mineral Waters, which was apt given that he is a lifelong pioneer. He had various roles in the Carlow-based company, including driving a delivery lorry and becoming a sales rep, and was twice named salesman of the year.
One of his big passions in life is music and in the 1960s he managed a showband called The Vikings, in which his brother Tommy played the saxophone.
It was through music and dancing that he met Anna Byrne at The Ritz Ballroom in Carlow town. The couple married and raised their children in Staunton Avenue, Governey Park, where Noel pursued his interest in gardening. One of his other hobbies was building up a train set, which he loved to show off to anyone who visited the house.
He is also a strong believer that everyone should learn to swim and was involved in the swimming teams at the local Community Games.

His beloved wife Anna sadly passed away in 2020 so Noel lived in the assisted living accommodation of St Fiacc’s House for several years before moving to Beechwood Nursing Home in Leighlinbridge this year.
At his birthday party, Noel had a letter and cheque from President Michael D Higgins, which he proudly showed to his brother Tommy (89), who was able to attend.
