CARLOW County Council has hired a new caretaker for St Mary’s Cemetery in Carlow. The new caretaker is expected to take up their role next week.
Over the past year, the council has received numerous complaints of anti-social behaviour and illegal dumping taking place in the graveyard. This has led the council to designate St Mary’s Cemetery as one of the six locations to receive a mobile CCTV camera to identify and fine people illegally dumping waste within the graveyard.
It’s been without a caretaker for some time so the responsibilities of looking after the place were being split between the town foreman and four or five other members of the council staff.
The responsibilities of a cemetery caretaker include liaising with undertakers, the public and the companies that make headstones while also maintaining the records of the interments.
