A memorial day for an Offaly teacher murdered almost four years ago will be held next Saturday.

Ashling Murphy (23) was jogging along the banks of the Grand Canal in Tullamore, Co Offaly, when she was stabbed more than 10 times on January 12th 2022.

Jozef Puska was found guilty of her murder two years ago and is serving life in jail. He had pleaded not guilty.

Last October, five of his family members were sent to prison for trying to hide his involvement in Ms Murphy’s murder.

The memorial day is being organised by the Ashling Murphy Memorial Fund to celebrate “the life and legacy of Ashling,” the organisers have highlighted.

It will take place on December 6th in the Bridge Shopping Centre in Tullamore, from 10 am to 5 pm.

Live music will be played, as a mark of respect, which will highlight the Offaly woman’s involvement with Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Éireann.

A Gaeltacht scholarship funded through the Ashling Murphy Memorial Fund will also be announced.

The Ashling Murphy Memorial Fund was set up in January 2023 in her memory.

The aim is to provide funds to groups in the traditional Irish arts, culture and heritage sector. The organisation has established three scholarships in her memory.
